Sour Patch Kids History

Sour Patch Kids is a popular brand of sour and sweet chewy candies known for their distinctive shape and sour coating. Here's a brief history of Sour Patch Kids:

Sour Patch Kids were introduced in the 1970s by a candy company called Jaret International. The original name of the candy was "Mars Men," and it was shaped like small alien figures. However, the candy did not gain much traction under that name.

In the early 1980s, the candy was rebranded as "Sour Patch Kids" and underwent a significant redesign. The alien-shaped candies were transformed into the iconic Kid-shaped characters that are recognizable today.

Initially, Sour Patch Kids were not very popular. However, they gained significant attention after a strategic marketing campaign that positioned them as a unique and tangy treat. The tagline "Sour. Sweet. Gone." emphasized the candy's combination of sour and sweet flavors.

In 1985, the American candy company Cadbury-Adams (now owned by Mondelez International) acquired the Sour Patch Kids brand and began mass-producing and distributing the candy.

Over the years, Sour Patch Kids expanded their product line to include different flavors and variations. The original flavors were lime, lemon, orange, and cherry. Today, there are various flavors available, including strawberry, blue raspberry, watermelon, and more.

Sour Patch Kids gained significant popularity and became a favorite among candy enthusiasts, especially children and teenagers who enjoy the intense sour taste and the subsequent sweet flavor.

In addition to the original Sour Patch Kids, the brand has introduced various spin-offs and extensions, such as Sour Patch Watermelon, Sour Patch Extreme, Sour Patch Xploderz, and Sour Patch Berries.

Sour Patch Kids have become a staple in movie theaters, candy aisles, and convenience stores around the world. They are often enjoyed as a standalone candy or incorporated into creative desserts and recipes.

The history of Sour Patch Kids showcases their evolution from a lesser-known candy to a well-known and beloved brand. Their unique combination of sour and sweet flavors, along with their playful Kid-shaped characters, has contributed to their enduring popularity among candy lovers of all ages.

Sour Patch Kids Memories

When I was younger, my mother would always take me grocery shopping with her. In addition to being absolutely fascinated by the endless variety and brightly colored aisles, I knew that the end of every grocery shopping trip would hold a special treat for me. As we would check out, she would always grab a bag of Sour Patch Kids and place them in our cart when I wasn't watching. When we would get home and unpack all the groceries, I would always discover with glee that the Sour Patch Kids had "mysteriously" appeared in one of the bags.

I would quickly open the bag and spread the Sour Patch Kids out on the table, carefully separated by color. I would eat them one by one, making my best puckered-up sour faces after every one, much to the amusement of my mother.

Now, years later, whenever I see a bag of Sour Patch Kids, I think of my mother and our shopping trips. And even now, I carefully separate them by color before eating them! ~ Shari from New York

Hi, my name is Tinasia and I am a huge fan of sour patch kids. To be honest, I didn't find out about sour patch kids until I was about 15 years of age. I remember the first time I tried them, I fell in love. I was so happy to finally find a candy that was actually sour! I felt the need to have them around daily. My older brother is far from a kid and so am I, but we both feel 8 years old when we eat them. Sour Patch Kids brings happiness to my life and I thank you guys for that. ~Tinasia from California
