Gum Drops Candy History

Gum drops are a type of candy that consists of small, chewy, gelatin-based pieces that are often coated in sugar. The candy has been popular in the United States for over a century and has a rich history.

The exact origin of gum drops is not clear, but it is believed that they were first created in the 19th century by candy makers who were looking for a way to make a candy that was both sweet and chewy. Early versions of gum drops were made by boiling sugar, water, and gelatin together and then shaping the mixture into small drops.

The popularity of gum drops grew in the early 20th century, and many candy makers began producing their own versions of the candy. In the 1930s and 1940s, gum drops were often sold in movie theaters as a sweet treat that could be enjoyed during a film.

Over the years, gum drops have undergone various changes and have been produced in a wide range of flavors and colors. Some popular flavors include cherry, orange, lemon, lime, and grape. The candy has also been used in various recipes and as a decorative accent for cakes and other desserts.

Today, gum drops remain a popular candy and are sold by many different manufacturers. Some popular brands of gum drops include Brach's, Jelly Belly, and Haribo. Gum drops are often sold in bulk or in small packages and are enjoyed by people of all ages.

Gum Drops Memories

In all my 54 years, my favorite candy has always been the large gum drops. There were six siblings in my family so Mom used to buy everything in quantity. We used to gather us all together and go to the drive-in movie shows.

We had a big station wagon and we always took our own candy and popcorn. I had to fight with my brothers and sisters to get my favorite pieces of Gum Drops.

I loved the black ones that taste like licorice and the red for their cherry flavor. But I wasn't the only one who liked the black gum drops. So every time we got some, it was like a war. Every time I see Gum Drops, I think of those days. And, I still eat them! ~ Connie from Iowa
