Moon Pies History

The Moon Pie is a classic American confectionery treat that has a storied history dating back to the early 20th century. Let's explore the fascinating story behind the creation and evolution of Moon Pies.

The Moon Pie was first introduced in 1917 by the Chattanooga Bakery in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The bakery was founded by Earl Mitchell Sr., a baker who sought to create a unique treat that would satisfy the hunger of coal miners and provide them with a substantial and portable snack.

Inspired by the sight of coal miners snacking on marshmallows and graham crackers, Mitchell decided to combine these ingredients to create a single, convenient treat. He sandwiched a layer of marshmallow between two round graham cracker cookies and dipped the entire assembly in flavored coating, usually chocolate.

The name "Moon Pie" is believed to have been coined by a bakery salesman who remarked that the treat was "as big as the moon." The name stuck, and Moon Pies soon became a popular snack in the Southern United States, particularly among coal miners, factory workers, and laborers.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Moon Pies gained widespread popularity as an affordable and filling snack, especially during the Great Depression and World War II. They were often sold alongside RC Cola in what became known as the "Moon Pie and RC" combination, forming a quintessential Southern treat.

Moon Pies became an integral part of Southern culture, associated with fairs, festivals, and outdoor events. They were commonly enjoyed as a nostalgic, indulgent snack, evoking a sense of simpler times and childhood memories.

Over the years, the Chattanooga Bakery expanded its Moon Pie offerings by introducing different flavors such as vanilla, banana, and lemon. They also experimented with various sizes, including the iconic "Double-Decker" Moon Pie, which featured an additional layer of graham cracker and marshmallow.

Moon Pies have made appearances in popular culture, including songs, movies, and literature. They are often associated with nostalgia, Americana, and the charm of Southern traditions.

Today, Moon Pies continue to be produced by the Chattanooga Bakery and remain a beloved treat across the United States. They are available in a variety of flavors and sizes, but the classic combination of marshmallow, graham cracker, and chocolate coating remains at the heart of this iconic confection.

Whether enjoyed as a quick snack, a nostalgic indulgence, or a delightful treat at outdoor gatherings, Moon Pies have captured the hearts and taste buds of generations, making them a cherished part of American candy history.
