Sour Candy History

Sour candy became a huge trend largely due to the release of Zotz in America in 1968. After Zotz many other types of sour candy appeared on the market such as Sour Patch Kids (previously called Mars Men), and Warheads. Later, many existing candy companies also released sour versions of their most popular candy to fit in with the trend such as Sour Skittles and Sour Nerds.

Sour Candy Memories

When I was younger, my mother would always take me grocery shopping with her. In addition to being absolutely fascinated by the endless variety and brightly colored aisles, I knew that the end of every grocery shopping trip would hold a special treat for me. As we would check out, she would always grab a bag of Sour Patch Kids and place them in our cart when I wasn't watching. When we would get home and unpack all the groceries, I would always discover with glee that the Sour Patch Kids had "mysteriously" appeared in one of the bags.

I would quickly open the bag and spread the Sour Patch Kids out on the table, carefully separated by color. I would eat them one by one, making my best puckered-up sour faces after everyone, much to the amusement of my mother.

Now, years later, whenever I see a bag of Sour Patch Kids, I think of my mother and our shopping trips. And even now, I carefully separate them by color before eating them! ~ Shari from New York
