Twizzlers History

Twizzlers is a popular brand of twisted licorice candy known for its distinctive shape, chewy texture, and fruity flavors. Here's a brief history of Twizzlers:

1845: The story of Twizzlers begins with Young and Smylie, a confectionery firm established in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. The company originally produced a range of products, including various candies and confections.

1845-1902: Over the years, Young and Smylie experimented with different confectionery recipes, including licorice-based candies. In 1902, the company decided to focus on producing licorice twists, which would eventually become Twizzlers.

1929: The company officially changed its name to Y&S Candies, Inc., marking a new era for the brand.

1968: Y&S Candies, Inc. was acquired by the Hershey Company, a well-known American chocolate manufacturer. The acquisition brought Twizzlers under the Hershey umbrella and expanded its distribution and marketing capabilities.

Twizzlers Memories

I remember as a jr high student I walked to school almost everyday. On the route there was a drug store soda fountain, that also carried candy. My favorite at that time, and still is, was a big bag of strawberry twizzlers. I believe there were twenty or more pieces in a package and it cost a whole twenty cents and worth every penny. I nibbled on my twizzlers for the next two or so blocks, saving the rest for the trip home until the next morning when I bought another bag. Now as an adult my husband and I have vending machines and it is still a very popular candy. ~ Pamela from Iowa

It's sort of simple really. As a kid I hated milk... in fact I still do. Twizzlers became my "bribe." My mother took a novel approach. With every glass of milk I was given a strawberry twizzler (referred to as a strawberry straw). I would nibble off both of the ends and proceed to drink my milk thru the "straw." Sometimes I negotiated a "double straw". Single or double, it worked, to the point where it took me years to acquire the taste of Twizzlers "plain." ~Jim from Connecticut
