Skittles History

Skittles is a popular fruit-flavored candy known for its vibrant colors and chewy texture. Here's a brief history of Skittles:

Skittles were first introduced in 1974 by the Wrigley Company, which is now a subsidiary of Mars, Incorporated. The candy was originally created and marketed in the United Kingdom before being launched in the United States in 1979.

The inspiration for Skittles came from a British company called Mars Limited. They sought to create a new type of candy that would offer a variety of fruit flavors in a small, chewy form. The name "Skittles" was chosen to evoke the image of a game in which players knock down pins with a ball, similar to the candy's small, round shape.

Skittles candies are made by combining sugar, corn syrup, and hydrogenated palm kernel oil to create a chewy base. The base is then flavored with natural and artificial fruit flavors to create the distinctive taste of each Skittles variety.

What sets Skittles apart is their colorful coating, which is made from a blend of sugar and food coloring. Each candy shell has a vibrant color associated with a specific fruit flavor, allowing consumers to easily identify and enjoy their preferred flavors.

Skittles initially launched with the classic original fruit flavors: strawberry, orange, lemon, grape, and lime. Over the years, Skittles expanded its flavor offerings to include variations such as tropical flavors, sour flavors, and limited-edition flavors tied to popular culture and holidays.

The candy's marketing campaigns have also played a significant role in its success. Skittles became known for its memorable and often humorous advertisements, which emphasized the colorful and playful nature of the candy.

Skittles quickly gained popularity around the world and became one of the top-selling candies. It is enjoyed by people of all ages and is commonly found in supermarkets, convenience stores, and candy shops.

In recent years, Skittles has continued to innovate with new product releases, such as Skittles Chewies, which feature a softer texture, and Skittles Dips, which include a yogurt-flavored coating.

The history of Skittles showcases its evolution from a creative idea for a fruit-flavored candy to a beloved brand with a wide range of flavors and a strong presence in the confectionery market. Its colorful appearance, fruity taste, and playful marketing have made Skittles a favorite among candy enthusiasts worldwide.

Skittles Memories

Skittles are my absolute favorite and have been since I was a little girl living in Hawaii. My big brother use to try to take my Skittles all the time. I would hide my bag in my room and my brother always found it. When he found it he would pour half of my bag in to his to make it seem that he had been saving his Skittles even though he finished his bag seconds after he got it.

But, I became wise to him and began counting my Skittles, taping the bag shut and then writing the number of Skittles on the tape. After that if he tried to take my Skittles I would have evidence that he took them and he would get in trouble. To this day Skittles are still my favorite and now I send them to my brother every time he is stationed overseas. His most recent package went to Afghanistan and now he shares his Skittles with the men in his unit. ~ Kim from Colorado
