About the history of Tootsie Rolls:

Tootsie Rolls are one of our most popular candies and are a true classic! In 1896, Leo Hirschfeld started his candy business in a small shop located in New York City. He wanted a candy that would not melt easily in the heat, so he developed Tootsie Rolls. He named the candy after his daughter, Clara "Tootsie" Hirschfeld. During World War II, Tootsie Rolls became a standard part of American soldiers’ field rations, due to the hardiness of the candy under a variety of environmental conditions. Tootsie Rolls are still made with the original 1896 recipe today!
