| The holiday of Halloween that we celebrate today has grown out of the influence of several other cultures and holidays throughout history. These include the Celtic feast of Samhain, the Christian holy days All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day, and the Roman feast of Pomona. One thing that has emerged from all these influences, though, is food! Even before Halloween candy became popular, there were other foods associated with the holiday. The Samhain tradition was to leave out offerings of food and drink to comfort the wandering spirits. Because Halloween comes during apple season, candy apples (known as toffee apples outside North America) became common Halloween treats. And of course, we can’t forget pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin seeds, and anything else made out of pumpkin! Trick or treating, as we celebrate it now, really began to boom after World War II, and savvy candy companies capitalized on this lucrative opportunity by selling seasonal packages containing smaller sized Halloween candy. Today, Groovy Candies sells more Halloween candy than any other kind! |
